Joe's New Blog

Nothing special, this is just my third effort at writing a blog about my life and what goes on in it: Hobbies, cooking, work, maybe the occasional book or DVD review, and so forth. Nothing really noteworthy, but this is sort of a little subset of my world...

Daily Journal: Day 27 of 365

It was a fairly long and busy day today. I got up at about 10:00. The girlfriend was having some fairly bad allergy issues, so I vacuumed the bedroom and the living room to try to help out some. It seemed to help at least a little. I really need to try to vacuum pretty much every day to try to keep her from feeling miserable.

We went to a hockey game at the American Airlines Center (pictured) today. Unfortunately, the Stars looked quite lackluster in the first period. They managed to come out of that one even at 0-0, but that luck didn’t last too much longer. They got scored on in the second period. They managed to score one goal shortly thereafter, but it got waved off because they said it was kicked in. I think it should have counted, but of course my opinion, and those of all the other Stars fans in the arena, didn’t mean squat. They did eventually get a goal to tie it in the early part of the third period, but Vancouver scored to take a 2-1 lead just a couple minutes later, and then they added an empty-netter to put the game away.

After the game, we stopped at the Macaroni Grill in Lewisville. She hasn’t eaten there for years, and I’ve never eaten there. She had the dish she always prefers there, which is the Penne Rustico. She said it wasn’t as good as it was before. I had the Shrimp Portofino, which was all right, but nothing to really write home about. Overall, it was about the same as Olive Garden, in my opinion. Maybe a touch better, but certainly not very much.

After the dinner, we stopped at Hobby Lobby, which is clearing out their Christmas items. They’re now at 80% off. I also had to get some supplies for my drawing endeavors, which I hope to start this year. So, I got a few pencils, good quality art pens, and similar things, as well as a new car for my prospective train setup. The girlfriend picked up a few gift bags and the like, as well as some nice ornaments for us and a few tacky ornaments for next year’s white elephant gift and ornament exchange, assuming we get invited again.

Following Hobby Lobby, it was on to Best Buy, where she wanted to find a new game for the Wii. It’s called Just Dance, and unfortunately Best Buy didn’t have it. I picked up the Wii Sports Resort, though. Our friends Scott and Betty recommended it quite highly. Unfortunately, it requires the special motion sensor thing for the remotes, and they were sold out of those.

So we bought my game and drove down to Hastings to see what games and such they had there. They also didn’t have the Just Dance, and they also didn’t have the motion sensor doodad, but we did each pick up a cheap CD from the $3.99 clearance bin. I got Stanley Clarke’s Bass Days, which I think might be a compilation of stuff from various of his solo CDs. I’m not familiar enough with his catalog to know for sure. She got Cargo by Men At Work. And then it was off to see if Target had her game and the sensors.

They had the game. It cost a little more than the price on Amazon or the Best Buy website, but I was interested in the instant gratification factor, so I got it anyway. And then we dropped off the rent and returned home.

We’ve spent the past five or six hours mostly playing the Wii Sports Resort, which is indeed pretty good. Some of the games (like golf and bowling) are pretty similar to the versions on the original Wii Sports. There are slight differences, mostly due to the increased sensitivity of the advanced motion sensor. And there are a lot of new games. Some good, some so-so. We’ve played a little of each of them, and so far I haven’t found any really horrid ones. The girlfriend is a lot better at some (like frisbee) than I am, so I guess I’d better practice up over the next few days. And, of course, she kicks my ass at the Just Dance. We played a couple of rounds of that together, and I actually did all right on some of them. Then she did a few of the advanced ones by herself, and I think they would have kicked my ass pretty badly. Now she’s playing the frisbee golf, which I suck at. And I think it’s just about time for me to start getting ready for bed. Another day tomorrow…
